The best way to arrange an interview is to contact WakeMed Marketing & Communications by calling 919-350-8000. After hours inquiries should be directed to the hospital operator who will route your inquiry appropriately.

To protect patient privacy, it is the hospital's policy that any on-duty news reporter or photographer must be accompanied by a Marketing & Communications representative when visiting any WakeMed campus.

Patient Condition Reports

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) dictates that health care organizations are only allowed to release a one-word patient condition reports when queried with patient's name spelled correctly.

During normal business hours, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, media should contact the Marketing & Communications department at 919 350-8120 for patient condition reports. 

After hours or on holidays, please contact the hospital operator 919 350-8000 and your call will be routed appropriately.

Patient Condition Definitions:

  • GOOD - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
  • FAIR - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.
  • SERIOUS - Vital signs may be unstable and are not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
  • CRITICAL - Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable. Source: American Hospital Association

In some circumstances, the hospital will not be able to release information if the patient or their family has asked for privacy. If a patient has requested this privacy designation, no information can be released about that patient and their presence in a WakeMed facility cannot be confirmed.
